July to October is the dry season and the migration window. Game concentrates around water, the grass is short, and the Mara is at its most dramatic. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, and camps sell out many months ahead.

January and February are dry, hot and clear — excellent for Amboseli and the mountain, with fewer vehicles than the high season.

March to May carries the long rains. Landscapes are green, birdlife is exceptional, newborn animals are everywhere and rates drop substantially. Some camps close, and some roads become difficult.

June is a quiet, underrated month: the rains have usually eased and high-season pricing has not fully arrived.

November brings the short rains, typically as afternoon showers rather than washouts, and is good value.

December is busy over the holidays with peak-season rates, but the weather is generally reliable.

If your dates are fixed, the right question is not which month is best but which parks and camps suit the month you have.
