Amboseli
Big-tusked elephant herds on open dust flats and swamps, with Kilimanjaro filling the southern sky on clear mornings.
Suggested stay
2 nights
Best months
June to October and January to February for clearest mountain views
Getting there
45-minute flight from Nairobi Wilson, or a 4 hour drive.
Amboseli is not the place for a long list of species. It is the place for elephants — large, relaxed, well-studied family groups moving between swamps in the open, which makes for photography you cannot get in thick bush.
The mountain is the other reason to come. It clears at dawn and again in the late afternoon; the middle of the day is often haze.
Two nights is usually right. It pairs well with the Mara, or with Tsavo and the coast on a longer southern route.
Good to know
- Dust is real in dry season — bring a cover for camera gear.
- Predator sightings are less reliable here than in the Mara.
- Good choice for a short first safari with limited days.
