Lake Nakuru, Rift Valley

Lake Nakuru

A compact, fenced Rift Valley park with rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, waterbirds and yellow-barked fever tree forest.

Suggested stay

1 night

Best months

Good all year

Getting there

2.5 to 3 hour drive from Nairobi.

Nakuru works best as a stop rather than a destination. One night breaks the drive between Nairobi and the Mara, and the park is small enough to see properly in a single afternoon and morning.

Both rhino species are present and reasonably easy to find. Flamingo numbers fluctuate with water levels and salinity — some years the lake is pink, some years it is not, and no honest planner will promise you either.

The escarpment viewpoints over the lake are worth the detour on the way out.

Good to know

  • Do not build a trip around flamingos; treat them as a bonus.
  • Fenced park, so it feels more managed than the conservancies.
  • Easily combined with Naivasha, half an hour away.
