Getting there
Light aircraft to Mara North or Musiara, then a short transfer.
Mara North is one of the conservancies that changed how Kenya safaris are planned. Camps pay a conservancy fee per bed, vehicle numbers are capped, and the land is leased from Maasai landowners who graze it in rotation.
In practice that means you can sit with a leopard without six other vehicles arriving, drive off-road to get the light right, and go out after dark — none of which is permitted inside the national reserve.
It pairs naturally with the reserve: a few nights in the conservancy for quiet and flexibility, then the reserve when the herds are on the move.
Good to know
- Conservancy fees are higher per night than the reserve, but crowding is dramatically lower.
- Walking safaris and night drives are usually included.
- Children's minimum ages vary by camp — worth checking before you fall in love with one.
