Masai Mara
Kenya's most famous reserve: open grassland, resident big cats and, from roughly July to October, the wildebeest herds crossing from the Serengeti.
Suggested stay
3 to 4 nights
Best months
Excellent all year; July to October for the migration
Getting there
45-minute light aircraft hop from Nairobi Wilson, or a 5 to 6 hour drive.
The Mara earns its reputation. Game density is genuinely high, the terrain is open enough to follow a hunt, and lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and buffalo are all resident rather than seasonal.
The reserve itself is busy in high season, particularly around the Sand River and Mara River crossing points. That is not a reason to avoid it — it is a reason to be deliberate about where you sleep, which gate you use, and what time you leave camp.
If your dates fall in the migration window, camps need to be held early. Good ones in the right locations are gone months ahead, and the difference between a well-placed camp and a cheap one an hour from the action is the whole trip.
Good to know
- Three nights is the practical minimum; two nights means one full day of game viewing.
- The national reserve allows more vehicles than the surrounding conservancies.
- Balloon flights and Maasai village visits are both possible but should be booked, not improvised.
