Ol Pejeta
A conservancy on the Laikipia plateau with the highest black rhino density in East Africa and Mount Kenya views.
Suggested stay
2 nights
Best months
Good all year
Getting there
Flight to Nanyuki, or a 3.5 to 4 hour drive from Nairobi.
Ol Pejeta is where conservation is most visible on a Kenya route. Black and southern white rhino, a chimpanzee sanctuary that takes rescued animals from outside Kenya, and active anti-poaching work you can learn about first-hand.
Activities go beyond game drives: rhino tracking on foot, night drives, dog-unit demonstrations, cycling in parts of the conservancy. That variety makes it one of the better stops for families with older children.
The plateau is cool and green compared with Samburu, and Mount Kenya sits on the horizon.
Good to know
- Drivable from Nairobi, which saves a flight leg.
- Very good value relative to the Mara conservancies.
- Pairs naturally with Samburu to the north.
