Wildebeest crossing a river during the Great Migration

Kenya parks guide

Where to travel in Kenya, and what each reserve genuinely offers

Most first safaris attempt too much. Two or three destinations, experienced properly, outperform five seen from a moving vehicle. Here is how I assess the principal options.

Masai Mara, Kenya

Masai Mara

3 to 4 nights

Big cats, the Great Migration (Jul–Oct)

Kenya's headline reserve, and it earns it. Lion, cheetah and leopard sightings are the most reliable in the country. In migration season the reserve fills up, so camp choice and booking timing matter more than anything else. The surrounding conservancies — Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North — are quieter, allow night drives and walking, and cost more per night.

Amboseli, Kenya

Amboseli

2 nights

Elephant herds and Kilimanjaro views

Flat, dusty and dramatic, with big elephant families in the open and Kilimanjaro filling the horizon on clear mornings. Best for photography and for travellers who want unmistakable Africa in a short window. Predators are here but far less dependable than the Mara.

Samburu, Kenya

Samburu

2 to 3 nights

Species you won't see further south

North of Mount Kenya, along the Ewaso Nyiro river. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich — the 'Samburu Special Five'. Hotter, rockier and far emptier than the Mara. Excellent for a second or third safari.

Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Lake Nakuru

1 night

Rhino and birdlife, easy to reach

A fenced, compact park in the Rift Valley with strong white and black rhino numbers and huge flocks of water birds. Reachable by road from Nairobi, so it slots neatly on the way to or from the Mara.

Tsavo East & West, Kenya

Tsavo East & West

2 to 3 nights

Space, red elephants, fewer vehicles

Kenya's largest wilderness, split by the Nairobi–Mombasa highway. Red-dust elephants, lava flows and Mzima Springs. Sightings take more patience than the Mara, but you often have them to yourself — and it links a safari straight to the coast.

Laikipia & Meru, Kenya

Laikipia & Meru

2 to 4 nights

Private conservancies, walking, horseback

Community and private land north of Nairobi with rhino sanctuaries, wild dog, and activities you cannot do inside national parks. Ideal for families, repeat visitors and anyone who dislikes convoys of vehicles.

Diani, Watamu & Lamu, Kenya

Diani, Watamu & Lamu

4 to 6 nights

Finishing a safari with a beach extension

White sand, warm reef and Swahili towns. Diani is the easiest with children, Watamu quieter and better for diving and turtles, Lamu the slowest and most atmospheric. Nairobi–coast flights are short and frequent.
