Tsavo
Kenya's largest wilderness, split into Tsavo East and West: red-dust elephants, vast horizons and very few vehicles.
Suggested stay
2 to 3 nights
Best months
June to October and January to March
Getting there
Flight or road from Nairobi; also reachable from Mombasa and Diani.
Tsavo is enormous, and that is its appeal. Game viewing takes more patience than the Mara, but you can drive for an hour without seeing another vehicle, which some travellers value above sighting counts.
Tsavo East is flat, open and famous for elephants stained red by the soil. Tsavo West is greener and more dramatic, with lava flows, Mzima Springs and Chyulu Hills views.
It is the natural bridge between a safari and time on the coast at Diani or Watamu.
Good to know
- Best paired with the coast rather than treated as a standalone trip.
- Sightings are less concentrated; go for landscape and solitude.
- Very hot in the middle of the day.
